More Thoughts About Platforms

A few weeks back I posted the Security Next.o platform and thought I quoted Marc Andreesons great definition. Seems I didn’t so here it is.

By definition a “platform” is a system that can be reprogrammed and therefore customized by outside developers and users and so it can be adapted to countless needs and niches that the platform’s original developers could not have possibly contemplated, much less had time to accommodate.

Today I was reading my feeds when I saw this comment here

Platform, in a lot of senses, is an over-used term. But really, building a platform is the essence of being a technology company. A media company is about content. A technology company is building a layer in the stack and allowing others to build content on top of you.

….Second life, Facebook, Google, and Salesforce, are communities of innovation that are attracting developers.
